Backflips, January 30th 2011

Goal #26 for  2011 (Do a back flip at least twice a month to not lose the feel) MAKING PROGRESS.

In 2010 I made the goal of learning how to do a backflip because I REEEEAAALLLY wanted to be able to do one, any time, any place. I just think they’re so cool. Well what would that goal amount to if I did it once and then never did it again? Not much. So 2011 I made the goal of doing a back flip at least twice a month. Now every time I do a back-flip I make a mental note and then record it later, that way I’ll know at the end of the year that I reached the goal. Here are the times I remember doing a back flip in January:

Jan 4th – At hungtington Beach with Andrew Bergamo, about to run into the ocean

Jan 17th – At Detour house after winning the bean-bag game.

Jan 18th – in the gym. (Showing off a little? maybe…)

Jan 24th – On Wilson field while throwing around a football, warming up to go lift.

Jan 25th – Did 6 or 7 back flips after running 2 miles. Danny Brennan got pictures

Jan 28th – Did a back flip with Josh Sorosky during a break in our all-day RA training meetings.

Teddy, January 29th 2011

Not gonna lie, I still have a teddy bear. I didn’t bring him to college the first semester of college, but when I realized that I missed him enough to still want him after being gone for four months, I decided to bring him back to school with me after winter break freshman year. And he’s been with me ever since.

Teddy was given to me by my Grandma on the day I was born. So we’ve been though a lot together. He reminds me of home. So I keep him around.

Oh, and just a quick heads up, I added a link to yesterday’s post to the documentary we made in Transcultural Documentary. It wasn’t there yesterday. So go check it out.

LA, Banksy, and Transcultural Documentary, January 28th 2011

For Transcultural Documentary (my interterm class), my group and I drove up to LA and interviewed a bunch of people about gentrification in Downtown. To check out what we made, go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Gn6IkDN7Sk

While we were there Genna spotted a piece of grafitti she identified as the work of Banksy, a prolific grafitti artest who has achieved worldwide fame and is the main subject of the documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop. According to Wikipedia “his satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine irreverent dark humor with graffiti done in a distinctive stencilling technique. Such artistic works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.”

For this piece Banksy scraped off the “ING” of “PARKING” in the parking lot that we parked at and drew a girl swinging from the “A” in Park, as if to say there should actually be a park here rather than a cement parking lot. Cool stuff. To Check out a website devoted to his grafitti, go here: http://www.banksy.co.uk/

On the way home I took a couple abstract shots of traffic.

Le’Quan in my Room, January 27th 2011

Le’Quan Jackson is one of my better friends at Chapman. Here you see him sitting on my bed at around 2:00 or 3:00 am eating McDonalds. ONGH.

Delt Spring Rush T-Shirts, January 25th 2011

Goal #19 for 2011 (Design a T-Shirt) ACHIEVED.

This year I was chosen to be Director of Media of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, which means I am in charge of creating the spring and fall rush shirts for the fraternity. Its funny because last year one of the goals I missed was design a T-Shirt, and this year when I put it on the list of goals again, it just so happens that I’m also placed in a position that requires me to do just that. I think thats a good idicator of a worth-while goal, when you find yourself achieving it because of what you’re doing in life anyway.

That being said, I cannot take even half of the credit for designing this T-Shirt. My Big, Mikey Caro is a master of photoshop (which I am not) and he came over and helped me design the shirt. The idea was based off of the “Mad Men” TV show and fashioned after those T-Shirts with a suit print on them. Mikey spent a good number of hours sitting next to me and telling me where to click and what to do in order to make the shirt. There’s no way I would have been able to do it without him. So thanks Mikey!

What a Film Class Looks Like, January 24th 2011

For those of you back home who are not fortunate enough to be majoring in Film Production, allow me to shed light on what a film class looks like.

Old people will be surprised to see that everyone has their laptop out and are activley surfing the web DURING the lecture. (Thats right, these pictures were taken while class was going on, which also means I was able to pull out my gigantic camera and take a couple of shots during the lecture too. And this is a class of about thirty, not 300.)

Young people will not be surprised. In fact this probably looks kind of like any GE class you might take.

For film students who are mostly in school to make movies, the real learning happens on set. Any time you put a film student in a lecture class whether thats a GE or History of Film, they lose focus fairly quickly.

Anyway, not bashing on Chapman or film students or anything, this is how it is at colleges across the U.S.

Just pointing it out.

Swim Team Dinner, January 23rd 2011

Again, I didn’t swim this year, but I still hang out with the swim team. This was a swim team dinner, (which I showed up late to because I had an incident I had to deal with as an RA) and we played catch phrase afterwards.

Love Your Body Photoshoot, January 22nd 2011

Chapman’s Fashion Squad did a photo shoot called “Love Your Body” to promote healthy body image. The idea is pretty cool. By having models pose in undergarmates with affirming messages and exuding self confidence they send out the message that no matter what you look like your body is beautiful. You should be happy because you really are beautiful.

It was a really fun photoshoot.

Swim Meet, January 21st 2011

I didn’t swim this year because of being so busy being a Resident Advisor, but I still hang out with the swim team. I dropped in for a bit at a recent home meet. Good to see errrbody.

Mark Mezak in Henley, January 20th 2011

Mark Mezak is an RA in Morlan Hall at Chapman. He is a Community Coordinator, which means he is in charge of the programming that goes on in Morlan. Here you can see him looking cool and creating his hall decorations for spring semester. I haven’t even started on mine yet, so he’s ahead of the game.

Beautiful Sunset, January 19th 2011

The weather in Orange is better than in Hawaii right now. AND the sunsets are more beauitful.

Take that Hawaii!

And Oregon, I’d make fun of you too except I’d actually feel bad because there’s nothing you can do. Enjoy your rain and cold for the next four to five months.

My Business Card, January 16th 2011

Goal #30 for 2011 (Make Business Cards) ACHIEVED.

I’m pretty psyced. They look really cool. Sure the font is too small and people with bad eyesight won’t be able to read my email, but….

…they look really cool!

…and hopefully the type of clients I attract will be young people with good eyesight.

Yeah. Thats it. I’ll call it a marketing decision.

Here’s the list of all my goals for 2011: GO GOALS!

Oregon Ducks T-Shirt, January 15th 2011

Ok, so the Ducks did go to the National Championship game. I may be from Corvallis, which makes me a Beaver at heart, but down in Southern California I root for anything that puts Oregon on the map. So I was rooting for the ducks on Jan. 10th. But they lost. Not sure wheter to be happy or sad.

Dodge College, January 13th 2011

Dodge College is the Film School at Chapman University. If I had my way, I’d take all my classes here. Actually this coming semester they are all here except for weight training. Right now I’m taking Tanscultural Documentary here.

Happy Photos Business Card, January 12th 2011

Somewhat on a whim I decided to contact Happy Photos about an internship for spring. I got their business card randomly in the fall from a guy in my fraternity. It took all the way until the new year for me to even pick up a phone and call them, mostly beause of being so busy, and partly not knowing yet that I wanted to focus on photography. But once I did the results were suprisingly optimistic. As of now it looks like I’ll be shadowing Xuong Do of Happy Photos on weddings in the Spring. It’s still kind of up in the air as far as schedules go and other logistics, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will work out and I can get some valuable professional photographer expereince.

If I do secure this internship, it will accomplish goal #8 for 2011 (Get an Internship).

Can’t wait to see what happens!

Photo Wall, January 11th 2011

Right now I’m kinda obsessing with my photo-wall cuz I just finished putting up all 609 photos I printed out at Costco over winter break. Add that to the approximate 600 that were already there, and I have well over a thousand photos on my wall. Unfortunatley that doesn’t quite accomplish goal #29 (Cover an entire wall with photos in my dorm room), because it doesn’t quite cover the entire wall. But have no fear, I know at some point this year I’ll be printing out another huge batch of photos, so hopfully I can cover the wall then.

Transcultural Documentary, January 10th 2011

The Interterm class I’m taking right now is called Transcultural Documentary.  Basicly we bus up to LA about once every week and make a documentary on the different people who live in the city.

I got to see the Walt Disney Concert Hall for the first time in my life, and then we hung out in Chinatown for a good part of the day.

Our first documentary was a city symphony on gentrification. You can watch it here: City Symphony

When My Room is Angry at Me, January 9th 2011

Do you ever play those games where you look at two different picture and you try and pick out all the differences?

Let’s play that game.

Hint: There are two differences between the following pictures.

Another Hint: One of them is I move.

Last Hint: A picture changes on the wall.

That’s too many hints. Stop cheating.

My Home Studio, January 8th 2011

This is where I live.

I like to call it my home studio.

I print off as many picutres as I can and post them all over my room, covering every square inch of wall that I can. It reminds me of all the fun stuff I’ve done, the cool people I’ve met, and the fun times I’ve had. It’s hard to feel bad where you’re surrounded by walls that look like these.

I love my room.
