Good example Zack. Good example.

Ride Your Unicycle to Class Week, May 30th 2011
Goal #23 (Ride my unicycle to class for an entire week) ACHIEVED
It was getting close to the end of the year, and I knew this was on my list of goals for the year, so rather than procrastinate and save it for the fall, I decided to get this one done spring semester. It took a little extra planning because riding my unicycle is a lot slower than longboarding, especially when going all the way to Dodge (the film school). But I left early for classes and got to everything fine. The hardest part was actually the chafing that I got from the unicycle seat. The more I rode the more I realized that riding a girraffe unicycle is kind of like lifting weights; if you don’t do it very often, you’ll get really sore really quick when you try and do it a lot all of a sudden.
Anyway, happy to cross this off of my list of goals for the year. It was a pretty fun one. Lots of people say hi to you when you’re on a 5ft girraffe unicycle, and a couple of the photos I’m posting were taken from peoples camera phones and posted on facebook. It was a good week.
Oh, and a couple of people also really wanted to try it out. I let them at their own risk. Included at the bottom are a couple of photos of Stephen Comp being very brave. He got maybe a half a pedal before falling off, but he was good at falling, so all was well.

Me Floating at Dodge, May 26th 2011
While waiting outside the Rotunda Dining Room at Dodge to take pictures for a Film-maker in Residence Dinner, I decided to try out my new toy, a remote-control shutter trigger. This fun little $14 gizmo allows me to set my camera anywhere, walk about 20ft away, and take pictures at a distance. I decided to make use of this by taking pictures of myself in the air jumping. This lead to a cool floating effect. I actually walked into the dinner late because I was having so much fun messing around with the remote shutter trigger. yay!
(Later on I decided I didn’t want to have the remote in my hand, so I put the camera on self-timer and just timed my jump so I was in the air when the shutter activated. That was kinda hard, but it allowed me to have my hands free and look cooler.)

Goal #24 for 2011 (Print out one of my pictures really big) ACHIEVED
Who knew that you could print out a 20X30 print at Costco for $10? I had to do it. It accomplished goal number 24 for the year and is also a great room decoration.

Me and Mario Pastega, May 23rd 2011
Mario Pastega is the president of Pepsi Bottling Company of Corvallis. In 2002, he was named to the National Bottlers Hall of Fame for his industry leadership.
Active in many community organizations and noted for his generosity, he has been a member of the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees since 1981. He was co-chair, along with Jean Starker Roth, of the foundation’s fund drive to build the Ralph Hull Regional Heart Center, which opened in 2002.
In 2002, Mario and Alma Pastega made a $350,000 pledge to initiate the construction of a guest house on the campus of Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis. The Good Samaritan Hospital Board of Trustees voted to name the facility The Mario Pastega House in recognition of this gift.
In addition to giving financial assistance, Pastega agreed to lead a fund drive to raise additional money for the house: approximately another $800,000 for construction and $1.5 million for an endowment
I interviewed him for a video that was shown at the Mr. Spartan Pageant. He remembered me from when I was in Mr. Spartan 2 years ago. It was fun talking to him about how things had been going recently with the Pepsi plant and the Pastega House. He is selling the Pepsi in the next couple of months and “retiring.” So it was cool to hear first hand from him about how that was going and what it was like to move on to a new stage in life.
Also: at one point in the interview I pretended to turn off the camera because Mr. Pastega seemed to be a little mechanical while it was running, but very relaxed when we were just talking. I pretended I turned off the camera and then asked him the interview questions in a casual way. Not only did he give a way better interview then, but we also started talking about other things, like how I was doing in school and what I wanted to do with my life. Mr. Pastega ended up giving me a huge compliment, saying I was “a professional” and that I he had a gut feeling that I would be very successful.

Mr. Spartan Dance Rehersals, May 22nd 2011
GOAL #12 for 2011 ( MC the Mr. Spartan Pageant) ACHIEVED (more elaboration)
The week leading up to the Mr. Spartan Pageant rocks. The guys and girls start practicing their dances up on stage, they start figuring out their skits, and the pageant starts getting pieced together. I loved watching from the stands as the guys polished up the dance. This was also when Phil and I were writing what we were going to do up on stage during the pageant as MCs.

Mr. Spartan Backstage, May 21st 2011
GOAL #12 for 2011 ( MC the Mr. Spartan Pageant) ACHIEVED
I am actually pretty proud of this goal. I really love Mr. Spartan. It was the highlight of my high school career and created some memories that will never leave me.
For those of you who don’t know what Mr. Spartan is, it’s a four-month long fundraiser my highs chool does to raise money for the Mario Pastega House and the Good Samaritan Cancer Center in Corvallis, Oregon. They choose 10 boys and 10 girls (plus some head-coordinators, a treasurer, and junior girls) who are role model students and put on an extravagant marathon fundraiser that culminates in a pageant with dances, talent skits, and the crowning of Mr. & Ms. Spartan. When I was a senior in high school I was runner up.
Last year I took a week off of school at Chapman and went back to MC the pageant because I had really wanted to since finishing up my year. That was an amazing experience. I pretty much got to do the whole last week of the amazing fundraiser over again with the class directly below me, who were still close friends.
Here are the blog posts I did on it last year:

http://nathanworden.wordpress.com/2010/04/28/more-pageant-photos-april-28th-2010/
This year I wasn’t sure if they would want me to come back again. The seniors this year would have been sophomores when I was a senior, and I was getting a little bit more disconnected. Regardless, it was still an amazing way to connect back to my roots, see my high school again, have a purpose, and add to the atmosphere and energy of Mr. Spartan, so I told myself if they’d take me again, I’d do it.
And so that’s how it got on the goal list for 2011. I thought if I want to do it enough to fly back up and MC again, then I might as well make it a goal. Stuff that goes on the goal list has a much better chance of actually happening.
Anyway, there were some amazing things about this year’s Mr. Spartan group (including getting to MC with Phil Campbell, who was a contestant last year when I MC’ed) and I’ll be blogging more about it in the next couple of days. For now, these are pictures that other people took of me and Mr. Spartan stuff the day of the pageant. Consider it the appetizer for all of the photos that I took.
Some of these are from the photo-shoot I did with the Mr. Spartan group the morning of the pageant, some are from backstage from Phil’s iPhone as he live tweeted the event (haha) and some are from right after the pageant when I posed with my parents and Phil.

Pretty big differentce.

Visiting Grandma, May 15th 2011
So I’m jumping around a little right now because I’ve been so busy. Right now whats happening with the blog is I’m skipping the big shoots and weddings that all had more than 1,000 photos and I’m posting the smaller days because I don’t have time to edit and cull right now. But its finals week so I get a free pass. I’m doing a lot of stuff right now.
This photo is from Spring Break when I went home to MC the Mr. Spartan Pageant. We stopped by Grandma’s house in Portland to say hi as we were on our way down to Corvallis.

Shoot with Xuong, May 14th 2011
Reason #1,000 why my internship is awesome:
In order to teach me poses that he wants me to do with grooms when I second-shoot him, Xuong had me dress up and pretend I was a groom, so I could feel what he was having me do. That way I’d be able to communicate it better to the grooms that I’ll work with, because I know what its like to be them. Awesome idea. I got a lot out of this little session where Xuong posed me and talked about what he wanted and how to get certain things and avoid others.
Oh, and now I have some cool photos of myself. Perfect!

Ed Royce Website, May 8th 2011
U.S. Congressmen Ed Royce of the 40th District of California is using one of my pictues in his banner slide show at the top of his site. On of my friends works for him and asked me if they could use the HDR shot I took of the Orange Circle. I gave my permission and BAM. There it is. Its kind of behind the picture of him, and its inverted and stuff, but its there. And I know it. Thats what counts.
Here’s the site: http://www.royce.house.gov/ (It shows up at the top after a couple of seconds)
And then here is a screen shot of it plus my original picture.
