Beti and Lou’s Wedding Rehearsal, July 6th 2011

Goal #17 for 2011 (Get  paid to take photos at a wedding) IN PROGRESS.

I got a job taking photos at Beti and Lou’s wedding in Long Beach, CA. Since it would be my first time shooting solo and primary I told them I’d come to their rehearsal, which would be held the same time of day, two days before the actual wedding. That way I could figure out light and get my bearnings. So this was the first part of getting paid to take photos at a wedding.

Beti and Lou were so much fun. Lou had a great sense of humor and Beti was genuinely sweet. They took me out to dinner with their kids (they both had been married before) after the rehearsal.

I even made a slideshow of the photos I took at the rehearsal and showed it to them on their wedding day beacause I thought they were awesome.

Surfing in San Diego, July 5th 2011

I. Can. Surf.

Yeeea!

I drove down to San Diego (technically Del Mar) with James Leslie and met up with Nick King and we did some surfing.

I caught a couple of waves. It was so much fun.

Carlie Baird at Her New House, July 4th 2011

Carlie was Senior Lead of Henley Hall last year. This coming year she decided to not be a RA again and moved off campus. I’ll be filling her spot. Right now she’s working for Target as an executive intern. She’s got a pretty good shot at getting hired when its over, and she still has anther year of college left. Pretty sweet.

Carlie and I talked a little about stuff I should be doing to get ready for being senior lead and what I could expect the job to be like. After talking to her I felt a lot more confident about being able to handel the position.

Next year is going to be a blast.

Simona at IKEA, July 3rd 2011

I’d actually never been in an IKEA before. To my surprise and delight walking through the IKEA in Costa Mesa with Simona was like going through Disneyland. Lots of different themed parts with tons of fun stuff to look at and a path on the ground with arrows pointing you in the direction of the next attraction. Games and puzzles, food, rest areas, lots of people, sweedish fish, I think IKEA will eventually just turn into a theme park.

Now they just need a roller coaster and they’re set.

Hollywood Sign Adventure, July 2nd 2011

So I like adventures.

And I had never been to the Hollywood sign.

Simona lives in Beverly Hills, and she had never hiked to go see it either.

My goal was to touch the sign. And I was so determined I even lead Simona up the side of the hill through bramble and brush to get there. But when we started getting close a voice over a loud speaker from the top of the hill boomed down and told us to not touch the sign.

Usually I try really hard to accomplish my goals, but this one wasn’t on the list to start the year, AND I probably would have gone to jail for a night if I had pushed on, so we decided that getting really close was good enough.

Oh, and we found a miniture replica, (which was still quite big) on a different hill at a horse stable that was in the hills next to the hollywood sign. Although a nice substitute, its still not quite the real thing. But it was kind of funny to see a parody like that so close to the real one.

50th Wedding Anniversary, July 1st 2011

So here’s a cool thing about working for Happy Photos (Xuong Do), when he can’t make a certain job, he’ll send me out to do it solo. This job happened to be a 50th wedding anniversary. They did the cake cutting again, they had friends and family show up, and they had me play a slide-show of all the pictures I took of everyone there after their kids got up and talked about them for a bit. But the coolest thing was when the couple got up and talked about how they stayed together so long. One of the foundations of their relationship was their faith in God. And the very last thing they did after all the festivities were done, was lead all their friends and family in singing a couple of their favorite hymns. It was pretty cool to see a group like that of long time friends and family all unite around a couple of people and sing to God.
