Public Safety Job, July 16th 2011
Public Safety at Chapman needs a new composite of all the officers on a huge photo of Memorial Hall. I said I’d help them out. Here is the old one, and a general idea of what the new one might look like.

Chapman Rockwall, July 15th 2011
Oh, the things I do for photography.
Chris Cresci and Michael Moore needed some photos of the Chapman Rockwall for its new website, so they asked me to come take some shots.
Side note: I have a *minor* fear of heights.
Once I got to the top of the rockwall (carrying my camera the whole way up, mind you) I looked down, and got a *minor* jolt of fear that schook my body from limb to limb.
…the rockwall is just so… high!
To make things even scarier, I took my camera off from hanging around my neck in order to get a picture of myself shaking in fear…. knowing full well that if I dropped it my camera would tumble down to the bottom of the wall and be no more.
But I was very carefull and so the only thing that was really shattered was my self-confidence.

KJ Owens Photoshoot, July 14th 2011
KJ Owens needed some new headshots, so we did a little photo-shoot which involved walking in the middle of Tustin, getting asked to stop walking in the middle of Tustin by a police man, and exploring the more rural area out by KJ’s condo as the sun went down.
Really fun.
The Photos came out great too.

Carrying Connor Do, July 12th 2011
Connor Do is Xuong’s son. He is about yay high and light enough to easily put on your shoulders.
Now that you know his approximate height and weight, look and see how cute he is!

Kelly Slater, July 11th 2011
Kelly Slater is the a 10x world Champion surfer. Huntington Beach gave him a key to the city on June 21st and had him talk in front of a crowed that must have been in the thousands.
Xuong was there to take photos and he brought me along, so I got to go in the press area and take some up close stuff.
Kelly seemed a little overwhelmed with the acknowledgement, and was a little lost for words. He still was very humble and thankful, but couldn’t help snapping a photo with his iPhone of the crowed.
Afterwards he signed autographs.

Fashion Shoot with Brandon Andre, July 10th 2011
Brandon Andre did senior photos for one of the residents in Henley. I thought they were pretty good so I called him up and asked if I could second shoot him. At first he didn’t think he was ready at that point in his career to have an assistant, but then he invited me to a fashion shoot he was doing.
Let me tell you, fashion is a totally different animal than anything I have ever done.
I was mostly holding reflector, but you’ll see from the shots that I was able to take, fashion has its own unique twist to it that, well, is quite different.

Richard Marks, July 9th 2011

Beti and Lou’s Wedding, July 8th 2011
Goal #17 for 2011 (Get paid to take photos at a wedding) ACHIEVED.
This was the one. I was shooting solo as primary photographer.
And I got paid.
Fantastic.
Beti and Lou were awesome, just a really fun, happy couple, their day went awesome, and I even got to climb up on the roof of their house and shoot down at the festivities.
Definitely learned a lot of things at this wedding. I know I have a lot of improving to do, but I know I’m on the right track, and I know I gave them something that they will cherish for years to come.

Beti and Lou’s Wedding Rehearsal, July 6th 2011
Goal #17 for 2011 (Get paid to take photos at a wedding) IN PROGRESS.
I got a job taking photos at Beti and Lou’s wedding in Long Beach, CA. Since it would be my first time shooting solo and primary I told them I’d come to their rehearsal, which would be held the same time of day, two days before the actual wedding. That way I could figure out light and get my bearnings. So this was the first part of getting paid to take photos at a wedding.
Beti and Lou were so much fun. Lou had a great sense of humor and Beti was genuinely sweet. They took me out to dinner with their kids (they both had been married before) after the rehearsal.
I even made a slideshow of the photos I took at the rehearsal and showed it to them on their wedding day beacause I thought they were awesome.

Surfing in San Diego, July 5th 2011
I. Can. Surf.
Yeeea!
I drove down to San Diego (technically Del Mar) with James Leslie and met up with Nick King and we did some surfing.
I caught a couple of waves. It was so much fun.

Carlie Baird at Her New House, July 4th 2011
Carlie was Senior Lead of Henley Hall last year. This coming year she decided to not be a RA again and moved off campus. I’ll be filling her spot. Right now she’s working for Target as an executive intern. She’s got a pretty good shot at getting hired when its over, and she still has anther year of college left. Pretty sweet.
Carlie and I talked a little about stuff I should be doing to get ready for being senior lead and what I could expect the job to be like. After talking to her I felt a lot more confident about being able to handel the position.
Next year is going to be a blast.

Simona at IKEA, July 3rd 2011
I’d actually never been in an IKEA before. To my surprise and delight walking through the IKEA in Costa Mesa with Simona was like going through Disneyland. Lots of different themed parts with tons of fun stuff to look at and a path on the ground with arrows pointing you in the direction of the next attraction. Games and puzzles, food, rest areas, lots of people, sweedish fish, I think IKEA will eventually just turn into a theme park.
Now they just need a roller coaster and they’re set.

Hollywood Sign Adventure, July 2nd 2011
So I like adventures.
And I had never been to the Hollywood sign.
Simona lives in Beverly Hills, and she had never hiked to go see it either.
My goal was to touch the sign. And I was so determined I even lead Simona up the side of the hill through bramble and brush to get there. But when we started getting close a voice over a loud speaker from the top of the hill boomed down and told us to not touch the sign.
Usually I try really hard to accomplish my goals, but this one wasn’t on the list to start the year, AND I probably would have gone to jail for a night if I had pushed on, so we decided that getting really close was good enough.
Oh, and we found a miniture replica, (which was still quite big) on a different hill at a horse stable that was in the hills next to the hollywood sign. Although a nice substitute, its still not quite the real thing. But it was kind of funny to see a parody like that so close to the real one.

50th Wedding Anniversary, July 1st 2011
So here’s a cool thing about working for Happy Photos (Xuong Do), when he can’t make a certain job, he’ll send me out to do it solo. This job happened to be a 50th wedding anniversary. They did the cake cutting again, they had friends and family show up, and they had me play a slide-show of all the pictures I took of everyone there after their kids got up and talked about them for a bit. But the coolest thing was when the couple got up and talked about how they stayed together so long. One of the foundations of their relationship was their faith in God. And the very last thing they did after all the festivities were done, was lead all their friends and family in singing a couple of their favorite hymns. It was pretty cool to see a group like that of long time friends and family all unite around a couple of people and sing to God.

Recent Recap, Le’Quan, Eggs, Lens, Detour, June 30th 2011
So, I’m still getting the blog up to date, and these are some things that all happened close to each other.
6/6/11 – I made myself scrambled eggs. And then I ate them.
6/7/11 – Le’Quan Jackson made fun of me on twitter. So I took a photo of him smirking as proof and uploaded it to facebook.
6/9/11 – I got a new lens from Xuong Do. Its the 24- 105mm f/4.0 that he always uses at weddings. He gave it to me with the condition that I had to work of its value by doing photo-shoots for him and editing. Its a pretty good deal for both of us, because he has two of that lens, which means he’s getting free work from me, and I get to use the lens a ton before I even really put down the money for it. ALSO, one of my goals for 2011 was to get a new lens, and although I already got a new one, this still couts as completing the goal even more.
Soooo: Goal #22 for 2011 (Get a new lens) COMPLETED. AGAIN.

A Day at Newport, June 29th 2011
So part of my summer plans were to try and learn how to surf. I didn’t get it done today, but I got mighty close, and I did do a lot of backflips, so that means…
Goal #26 for 2011 (Do a back flip at least twice a month to not lose the feel) IN PROGRESS
Oh, Josh did some backflips too. And a back hand springs into a backflip. So he’s pretty cool too.

Mom and Dad’s 25th Anniversary, June 28th 2011
GOAL #10 for 2011 (Do something for every one of Mom and Dad’s Monehly Anniversaries) IN PROGRESS
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Today is my Mother and Father’s 25th ANNIVERSARY. They are amazing and I love them very much. Whats really cool is that Mom and Dad celebrate their anniversary MONTHLY. They just do the little things often as a way to appriciate each other in their day to day lives. I think this is awesome because I personally believe that anything you want to get good at, whether its taking picures or, well, being married, you should practice everyday. Mom and Dad set an awesome example of that and I am so blessed and honored to have them as my parents.
LOVE YOU MOM AND DAD!
note: it is one of my goals for the year to awknolodge Mom and Dad’s monthley anniversary. So far this year I have called them on every 28th and talked to one or both of them and wished them a happy anniversary.
Actual Date of Photo: This one was taken last year, 11/18/2010
A Day at Oceanside, June 28th 2011
Dove down to Oceanside to Meet Xuong for a shoot. Got their pretty early so I got out my camera and started taking photos of Oceanside’s really interesting City Hall. Random passerbys saw me with my camera and started talking to me. I ended up hanging out with two different groups of people. Just shooting the breeze and getting to know them. Pretty cool.
The shoot with Xuong was great. Our model was really nice and talented, and I learned a lot about posing.
When we went down to the beach there was a lot going on too. Some teanagers having some sort of dance-off in a circle, and another photographer doing family portraits in the sunset.
Yum yum.
